Selection of materials using different criteria, application of statistics in materials selection. Limitations in properties and applications of different metals and alloys: plain carbon steels and important non-ferrous alloys. Specification of steels, composition, heat treatment, microstructure and properties of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Metals, ceramics and polymers for light and heavy structural applications, corrosion resistant applications, high and low-temperature applications, design of wear resistant materials, magnetic, electrical and electronic applications, pressure vessels, springs, bearings, tools, and medical implants and prostheses application. Design of composites, shape memory alloys, metallic glasses. Advanced and smart materials.
