Equilibrium Thermodynamics: Review of the laws of thermodynamics, Free energy and chemical equilibria, van’t Hoff’s isotherm and isochore, Gibbs-Helmholtz equation, Ellihgham diagram-method of free energy determination; Non ideal systems, Thermodynamics of solutions, Debye-Huckel theory for activity coefficient of electrolytic solutions; determination of activity and activity coefficients; ionic strength. Chemical Equilibrium: Free energy and entropy, partial molar quantities, Equilibrium constant, Temperature – dependence of equilibrium constant, phase diagram of one – and two – component systems, phase rule, theories of chemical reaction rates.
