Welcome to School of Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

The School of Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (SMMME) at IIT Bhubaneswar was established in 2012. It is a unique initiative in the present science and technology education and research scenario of India. It is perhaps the only school among premier institutes where minerals, metals and materials have come into a collaborative existence with a mission to be locally relevant and globally competitive. Located in the state of Odisha, one of the most mineral rich states of India, the school is aware that the maximum economic benefit from a mineral could be achieved when economically transformed to its final product leading to ultimate benefit.

The focus of school activities is therefore multi-directional with an emphasis on both teaching and research. In this regards, the school has drawn a road-map to progress via partnership with Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) at Bhubaneswar and student and faculty exchange with Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at Warwick University, UK and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. The School has also received a generous endowment of 30 million INR from MGM Group to establish a permanent Chair Professorship.

Currently, the faculty members are engaged in sponsored projects by Department of Science and Technology, UGC-DAE Consortium of Scientific Research - Kalpakkam, Planning Coordination Department - Government of Odisha and Uchchatar Aviskar Yojana - MHRD. Also, few consultancy projects with Tata Steel Limited, Tata International Limited and others are being undertaken.

Message from the Head of School

Welcome to the School of Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar. Our school has very good dedicated faculty members working in emerging areas. The school’s thrust areas are: Transport and Structural Materials, Energy Materials and Devices, Strategic and Functional materials, various Manufacturing Processes (including Additive Manufacturing), etc. We have several facilities for processing, manufacturing, testing, and characterization. The undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to pursue research with innovative and out of box ideas and to enhance their contribution in the core engineering related issues related to the Nation's growth and under self-reliance program (Make in India) of our Country. We support students to carry out research work with the Faculty from SMMME or other Faculty members from other schools in our Institute.

At this web site, you will see the growth of our school since its inception in 2012. Faculty members at our school are engaged in research at the frontiers of metallurgy and materials science. New laboratories dedicated to industrial and basic research have been established.

We encourage students and faculty from other Institutes and Academia and Industries to have collaborative research.
