IIT Bhubaneswar was established by the Government of India in 2008 through Institutes of Technology Act 1961 (IIT Act) and as amended in 2012. The Institute began its academic journey in the same Academic Year 2008-09, with the invaluable support of the mentor Institute IIT Kharagpur. The academic journey was started by admitting the first batch of students to the B.Tech. program in the core disciplines of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The Institute boasts a vibrant student and faculty community drawn from different parts of the country; it has truly emerged as a microcosm of India in its permanent campus at Argul. Within a short span, it has expanded rapidly to introduce Master’s and Doctoral programs across various distinct schools, including Engineering, Basic Sciences, Earth, Ocean & Climate Sciences, and Humanities. Process of decision making – Identify key decision making points |
Decisions at IIT Bhubaneswar are taken in accordance with the provisions of the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, the Statutes, Ordinances, Academic Rules & Regulations, and the policies and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education from time to time, alongside the resolutions passed by the Board of Governors (BoG) and established institutional procedures. Broad policy matters are decided at the level of the Director, the Senate, and the Board of Governors. The Director, Deans, Registrar, and designated officers of the Institute are authorized under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, the IIT Bhubaneswar Statutes, and the approved Delegation of Financial and Administrative Powers to take key decisions and ensure smooth institutional functioning. To promote agility and accountability, the Institute adopts a decentralized administrative structure.
